Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 weapon progression and attachment guide
Complete introduction to the new systems
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has brought major changes to the attachment and gunsmith system of the franchise. The overall change includes a weapon progression system and a major change in the process of unlocking the weapons and their attachments. Developer Activision and Infinity Ward have changed almost everything related to gunsmith starting from its interface to the attachments. In this article, we will provide you with a complete guide on the weapon progression and attachment system of COD Modern Warfare 2 for your better understanding of the whole system.
The new gunsmith system of COD Modern Warfare 2 explained
The gunsmith system was first introduced in Modern Warfare (2019) as a unique feature to unlock and equip new attachments to the weapons. The gunsmith system introduced a unique way for the players to arrange their loadout system with more customization in the weapons.
Taking notes from the response of the community on the previous gunsmith system, Infinity Ward has brought some major changes to the weapon progression system of COD Modern Warfare 2. The developer wants to create a far more explorative weapon builder with the newly added mechanism, reducing repetition while posing manageable difficulties to unlock attachments and camouflage.
The developer made a new Weapon Platform system available as part of the overhaul, allowing players to create and improve a weapon much beyond its class to completely personalize their loadout. By switching Receivers on a particular platform, they may upgrade their weapon platform from an assault rifle to an SMG, DMR, and/or LMG while using a complete complement of attachments to support the function of their weapon.
Changes to the mechanism for unlocking weapons and accessories are also being made by Infinity Ward. Attachments are exchanged between and between Weapons Platforms thanks to branching advancement and weapons platforms. Depending on the attachment, it may be available for all weapons in the game, or it may only be unlocked for guns on a certain platform.
Weapon Platform is a group of five or more weapons
According to Infinity Ward, the Weapon Platform is a group of three, four or five weapons of the same manufacturer and these weapons also share similar attachments. However, there are still some Weapon Platforms containing single weapons like the RPG-7 and Lockwood MK2 “cowboy rifle.”
Players will unlock these Weapon Platforms from different manufacturers as their military rank increases in the game. Players can then upgrade these weapons of the specific platform and change their receiver to make it a completely different gun.
For example, M4 is the first unlocked Weapon Platform in the game from the manufacturer Tempus Armament. Every weapon receiver in its platform, including the M4, M16, 556 Icarus, FTAC Recon, and FSS Hurricane, may use any Tempus Armament attachment. Also in the progression menu, players can also view their weapon mastery and upgrade rewards of these specific weapon platforms.
COD Modern Warfare 2 features a brand-new weapon attachment unlock system
Alongside the Weapon Platform system, Infinity Ward also brought changes to the attachment unlock system of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. In the new Modern Warfare 2, the weapon attachment unlock system features two new mechanisms for unlocking the attachments. They are mentioned and described below:
Weapons Platform specific attachments
These attachments are shareable between all Receivers within the platform:
- Rear Grip
These attachments once unlocked, can only be used with guns from the same Weapon Platform. Players cannot equip these attachments with guns from other Weapon Platforms.
If compatible, these attachments can be used across every weapon in the game:
These attachments once unlocked in any of the Weapon Platforms, can be used in every other gun available. For example, SZ Reflex Optic and the Echoline GS-X Suppressor Muzzle attachments are unlocked in weapon levels 1 and 2 of the M4 Weapon Platform.
After unlocking these attachments in the M4 Weapon Platform, players can use these attachments with all other weapons in the game. These types of attachments may be unlocked once for each platform’s specific weapon, although various weapon platforms require separate unlocks for their respective magazines and barrels.
