Activision confirms a “full premium” Call Of Duty release for 2023

The content might not be a traditional CoD release.

In a recent earnings call,  Activision reported that a “full premium” Call of Duty release is coming this fall. The developer’s report seems to confirm earlier reports that claimed the game this year would be an addition to Sledgehammer Games’ current Modern Warfare 2 game.

The publisher has been eager to reassure its investors that another game is on the way, in addition to loads of talk about how much money Modern Warfare 2 made last year—along with the series’ collection of microtransactions, of course.

Next Call Of Duty Campaign to be developed by Treyarch Studios

In a recent press release announcing Q4 2022’s financial result Activision stated- “Across the Call of Duty franchise, our teams are working to amplify the success of the fourth quarter, with 2023 plans including even more engaging live services across platforms and the next full annual premium release in the blockbuster series.”

A Bloomberg report last year claimed that Call Of Duty will be skipping its annual entry in 2023, for the first time since 2004. It is assumed that the upcoming release will be a Modern Warfare 2 expansion based on Activision’s plans for a new Call of Duty game to be released in 2024.

This year’s game is a reportedly Sledgehammer-developed premium expansion for Modern Warfare 2 according to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier. Treyarch is developing a whole new game for 2024, he stated. The expansion would be sizable, and would likely be released as a Year 2 update for MW2. However, Schreier also mentioned that this could be a standalone release, not requiring players to own the base game.

Activision using “premium release” to describe the upcoming content might not be a good sign as the company has used “premium title” to describe $70 games in previous earning calls. This could mean that the year two expansion might cost $70, instead of the previous DLC’s cost of $30.

Activision has been releasing new Call Of Duty titles annually since 2004, they generally are among the most financially successful games every year. The last entry in the series was Call Of Duty Modern Warfare:2, which was released on October 28, 2022, for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. There is also a standalone, free-to-play game in the series named Call Of Duty: Warzone 2.0 which is also available on all the above-mentioned platforms.
