EA reportedly cancelled an in-development Apex Legends single-player title
Titan falls off the Apex
After the recent announcement of shutting down Apex Legends Mobile, only a few months after its release, a report has been published claiming that a single-player game based on Apex Legends’ Universe has been canned by EA.
As reported by Bloomberg, the title was being developed by Respawn Entertainment, the makers of Titanfall and Apex Legends, and around 50 people were in the development team of the unannounced project.
The game was codenamed “Titanfall Legends”
The cancellation comes after Electronic Arts Inc.’s earnings call in which the revenue generated last quarter didn’t meet the company’s expectations. Another unreleased mobile title based on Battlefield was also canceled which led to shuttering of its Pasadena, California, mobile game studio Industrial Toys, which worked on the game. Halo co-creator Alex Seropian was a co-founder of the studio which was acquired by EA in 2018.
Respawn’s next Star Wars game titled Star Wars Jedi: Survivors has also been delayed to April 28. The canceled game had a team of about 50 people and EA will try to find positions for them within the company. Anyone who can’t be placed will be given severance packages and laid off.
The unannounced game was codenamed Titanfall Legends and was supposedly set in the shared universe of Titanfall and Apex Legends. The project was reportedly being led by creative director Mohammad Alavi until he left the company in January 2022. Alavi was a senior designer on the Titanfall series and the narrative design director on Apex Legends and spent 11 years working at Respawn.
The first Titanfall game was released in 2014 and was mainly focused on multiplayer and didn’t include a single-player story campaign whereas Titanfall 2 had a single-player campaign mode along with multiplayer maps and game modes.
Titanfall 2 was very well received and its story campaign is considered to be one of the best FPS campaigns by many. Apex Legends was released in 2019 as a battle royale but shared many mechanics as well as the universe of the Titanfall series. Apex Legends is highly successful, earning more than $2 billion in revenue.
