Studio Ghibli x Lucasfilm collaboration: Here’s what to expect

Studio Ghibli has confirmed it's collaboration with Lucasfilm through an enigmatic Twitter post

Two of the greatest film studios of all time – Studio Ghibli and Lucasfilm, have hinted at a collaboration for an upcoming project through a Twitter tease. Even though the said video was just 14 seconds long, it has the fans going wild with excitement, and of course, endless theories regarding what the collab could be about.

Studio Ghibli is a Japanese animation studio that is one of the biggest in its line and is known for making some highly notable animated movies like Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, with the most recent release being Earwig and the Witch, in 2020. Lucasfilm is a quintessential American studio, known for its renowned Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Willow franchises.

Studio Ghibli x Lucasfilm: What the fans can look forward to

What exactly is this collaboration, nobody knows. Everyone has their speculations and the number of possibilities seems to have no end. The 2 studios could be partnering up for any one of Lucasfilm’s upcoming projects or a completely new one. With Indiana Jones returning to theaters next year with a new series and Willow making his Disney+ debut later this month, the companies could have partnered up for any of these franchises.

Though taking a look at Lucasfilm’s Star Wars history tells us an entirely different story. Before this, Lucasfilm partnered with seven different anime studios worldwide just recently on its series, Star Wars: Visions, which has a second season on its way. This is why the speculations of this collaboration being for the same are the strongest. Though there is no other confirmation, the Star Wars Twitter account did quote tweet the video.

The executive producer of Lucasfilms, James Waugh apprised The Hollywood Reporter in 2021 saying, “The goal with ‘Visions’ was always that we wanted this to be authentic Japanese anime. We wanted it to be a true expression from these individual creators in a process that they’re used to. The last thing we wanted to do was be a Western studio that went with our ideas and then really leaned on them for their aesthetic. They were creating stories and concepts that could only come from their unique cultural perspective.”

It seems like a safe bet that they are collaborating on a Star Wars project. Even though Disney and Lucasfilm have not revealed much about who is contributing to Season 2 of Star Wars: Visions, it is pitched as a “global tour, celebrating the incredible animation happening across countries and cultures.”

No matter the outcome, its a win for everyone

Whatever may be, the excitement of the two biggest companies joining forces for a project itself is enough for everyone to be sure that the result would be nothing less than epic. More information is soon expected to come up regarding the same and hopefully an official statement too. Until then, we wait with bated breath and speculate more with every hint that is dropped.

Season 1 of Star Wars: Visions is currently available for streaming at Disney+. Season 2 doesn’t have a release date yet, but it was previously stated by the executive producer James Waugh that they’re aiming for its release in Spring 2023. Lucasfilm will release the series, Willow, on November 30, 2022, on Disney+. Also, the 5th Indiana Jones film is scheduled to be out on June 30, 2023.
