Launch checklist for existing and new Overwatch players
1. Activate SMS protection in Overwatch 2
After the launch, both existing and new Overwatch players must connect an eligible cellphone number to their Battle.net account to play Overwatch 2. Overwatch 2 is making this mandatory for all the players as a part of their Defense Matrix initiative, a multi-pronged system to combat disruptive in-game behavior. Here is how to activate SMS protection:
- Visit https://account.battle.net/ and log in. Navigate to “Account Details”.
- Add your phone number. Note that phone numbers of restricted countries, and pre-paid and VOIP numbers cannot be used for SMS protection.
- Click ‘continue’ and enter the verification code sent to your cellphone to activate SMS protection.
2. Merge accounts in Overwatch 2
Players can now combine multiple Overwatch accounts to carry progression and in-game cosmetics into Overwatch 2 on a single profile thanks to the launch of cross-progression. Every player with a linked console account will be prompted to identify, choose, and confirm the accounts you want to merge upon login. Following your approval, your accounts will be set up to be merged when Overwatch 2 launches.
Regardless of platform, all players will require a battle.net account to play Overwatch 2. Their Battle.net account will be used to exchange in-game cosmetics and progress between linked console accounts by storing progress from connected console accounts.
3. Pre-download Overwatch 2
Only existing Overwatch players can pre-download Overwatch 2 prior to the launch. Overwatch 2 has a 50 GB pre-download available for existing PC users and owners of the Watchpoint Pack for PC. For players who have Battle.net’s automatic updates enabled, the download will start itself in the background. If not, they must manually start it by clicking the gear icon to the right of the play button and choosing “Check for Updates.” For existing console users, this can be done starting at approximately 6:00 p.m. CEST on October 4.
New players can only download Overwatch 2 after the launch. The download size for the console is ~30 GB and the download size for the PC is ~50 GB.
