Xbox, Sony, and Nintendo to reportedly skip E3 2023

More publisher backing out of E3.

E3 has been in a rough spot for some time now but, it was supposed to come back this year as “recognizably epic”. But, the future of E3, which used to be the premiere convention for fans and publishers alike does not look bright as three of the biggest gaming companies might not show up for the event.

According to a report by IGN, Xbox, Nintendo, and Sony won’t have a booth at the E3 convention this year.

Xbox to hold a separate Showcase around the same time

E3 (short for Electronic Entertainment Expo) is a trade event for the video game industry. The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) used to organize and present E3, but this year’s event will be organized in partnership with ReedPop, the events company behind PAX, Star Wars Celebration and New York Comic Con. E3 includes an exhibition floor for developers, publishers, and manufacturers to showcase their titles and products for sale in the upcoming year.

In a recent interview with IGN, Xbox head Phill Spencer mentioned that Xbox is timing its showcase with E3 at a moment “convenient for press and even consumers” at the event, meaning it’s likely to roughly align with the event itself. However, Xbox would not have a booth at the event.

E3 took place annually in June at the Los Angeles Convention Center from 1995 to 2019. The event was canceled for the first time in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the event in 2021 was held online. The 2022 event was fully canceled. But, even before 2020, the event was falling in popularity as big publishers like Sony started skipping the event in 2019 and Nintendo also didn’t hold big conferences at the event for quite some time.

After 2020, all the major publishers started hosting their events and live streams to announce their upcoming games like Sony’s State Of Play, Nintendo’s Direct, and Xbox/Bethesda showcases. E3 also faces competition from Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest which will be held on 8 June 2023, just a few days earlier than E3.

This year E3 will be running from June 13-16 and would take place at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The 15th and 16th would be open to the general public and are being called “E3 Gamer Days”.
