Warhammer 40K Darktide Beginners guide

Everything you need to know when getting started with Warhammer 40,000:Darktide

Warhammer 40K Darktide is a Fatshark-published and developed game. This game is quite similar to one of their previous entries Warhammer: Vermintide 2, where four players of different class types team up to fight against multiple AI-controlled enemies. The enemies vary from hordes of zombies to elite and special-classed monsters. In this Warhammer 40K Darktide beginners guide, we’ll walk you through all the basics of the game to make your gameplay experience easier.

The game’s story takes place in the year 40,000, where a team of 4 Inquisitorial Agents is sent to investigate a potential chaos infiltration on the planet Atoma Prime in the hive city of Tertium. If you are starting new, make sure to check our detailed class guide.

Creating Your Character

The character creation first introduces you to a class system, with 4 classes to choose from. Based on their archetype there are a sharpshooter, tank, mage, and a balanced character. If you want a class guide in more detail you are in luck as we have covered it here.

Make sure to read their abilities/strengths before choosing as this will make the maximum impact. The rest of the character customization includes body types, head, eye, face, tattoo, voice, etc, these are only visual and auditory and have nothing to do with performance on the battlefield.

Play through the opening sequence

Opening sequences and tutorials can be lengthy and boring. It can be tempting to skip the tutorial and move on immediately to the main missions. However we would advise you not to do that as the tutorial does a fine job of narrating an interesting story with its dark and grim environment, also the tutorial can prepare you to survive in the real world. After completing the basic tutorial in Warhammer 40k Darktide there is also an advanced one to teach you some advanced concepts and techniques. Be sure to try it out!

Quickplay helps in the beginning

Quick play simply put will help you find the mission on the difficulty level you select. Out of the overwhelming, the high number of missions out there using this tool will really save you a lot of time.

The only downside with this method is that you might end up joining in the middle, other teams might already be halfway done this will give you fewer rewards. Of course, once you are accustomed to the game you can pick out missions on your own.

Experimentation is the key

Experiment with different weapons and classes. Only when you test out different combinations for yourself will you find what works for you. Each weapon and class type works differently for every play style.

While the stats of a particular weapon may be high that doesn’t mean its the best weapon out there, maybe there is a weapon with a lower stat but you are way more comfortable with it, or maybe you just prefer its elegance, or maybe you are after a weaker weapon to give yourself a challenge. What matters is you keep experimenting, keep testing, and keep trying different weapons and class combinations.

Test weapons in Meat Grinder

The “Meat Grinder” menu is unlocked after the psychic lesson, but you can’t access it until you reach level 2 of trust. The meat grinder is where you can safely test new weapons you acquire against foes that don’t fight back, so get back to Sefoni in the psykhanium after you’re done.

Learn the combo chains for each new sword and axe, hone your grenade toss and get accustomed to the recoil from large guns. You can even view the damage per second value after every strike.

Understand your passives

Each character class in Darktide has a set of passive skills that should help you play your character and fill out your team’s roles. For instance, The Veteran class does more damage to vulnerable areas, making them more effective against powerful elites and specials.

Then there is the Preacher class which can withstand a death blow and becomes invulnerable for 5 seconds, although you should keep in mind that this passive skill requires a 90-second duration to recharge. Whatever character you play keep in mind how these passives work and also choose an appropriate weapon to compliment the entire build.

Stick together and avoid camping

As powerful as you might think you are, it’s important to stick together in Warhammer 40k: Darktide. This is a cooperative game after all and a very ruthless one. You will not survive the world out there and you will get obliterated. Stick together and work as a team. Also, hordes of enemies can spawn and swamp your team at any moment, and hence camping in one place can be damaging to your team. Hence it’s always advisable to keep moving toward your goal.

You can purchase items you cannot use

If something is available for purchase in the armory exchange but is greyed out, that indicates it is above your current degree of trust and cannot be used, but it doesn’t mean that you cannot buy it. If you notice some really cool gear and you have the full flexibility of purchasing it right away.

Even though you don’t have the level of using it, yet. It’s wiser to buy it right away as the shop keeps churning out equipment every hour and by the time you do have the level to use it, you may not find it in the shop.

Join forces with your friends

Cooperative games are ultimately best enjoyed with friends and this can also lead to better results! Rather than a bunch of randos playing with friends will allow you to coordinate better and plan out every strategy to win in a tough environment.

As this is a team game it is all about strategizing and picking out the best class and the best weapons for every player in your team so that each player can successfully fill in their roles and your team as a whole can be unstoppable. So take all the time you need strategizing and do not shy away from it.

Keep exploring

There’s a lot to explore in Darktide. You can find rare items and useful resources if you can put in a little extra effort. Besides the items, there are pretty eye-candy locations as well that will definitely make the effort worth it. So don’t shy away from exploring.

And that’s it for our Warhammer 40k Darktide beginner’s Guide. We hope that this collection of advice will be useful to you as you eliminate the emperor’s adversaries!
