Xbox CEO mentions 2023 would be crucial for them as 2022 lacked major releases
Xbox aims big in 2023
Xbox recently showcased several games in the recent Developer_Direct that would be released in 2023 and even shadow-dropped Tango Gameworks’ first Xbox-exclusive game Hi-Fi Rush during the event. 2023 looks to be a year in which Xbox fans would be able to experience a big release every few months but as admitted by Phill Spencer “2022 was too light on games” and he has promised a stronger 2023.
It was Tango Gameworks’ idea to shadow-drop Hi-Fi Rush
In a recent interview with IGN following the Xbox Developer_Direct showcase Head of Microsoft Gaming said “our commitment to our fans is that we need to have a steady release of great games that people can play on our platform, and we didn’t do enough of that in 2022, there’s no doubt. And fundamentally, that’s on me. I’m the head of the business.”
2022 turned out to be not such a great year for Xbox in terms of big exclusives as Bethesda’s Starfield and Arkane’s Redfall which were supposed to launch in 2022 have been delayed to 2023. Halo Infinite which launched in November 2021 also saw a decline in player count due to several delays between Seasons and the late inclusion of fan-favorite Forge Mode. Last year’s Xbox exclusives included smaller, more experimental games like Obsidian’s Pentiment and Grounded, As Dusk Falls, and Immortality.
However, Spencer’s confidence in 2023 is backed by recent release date announcements of much-awaited games like Redfall, Forza Motorsport 8, Minecraft Legends, and Starfield. Hi-Fi Rush, which is a rhythm-based character action game developed by the makers of Ghostwire Tokyo and The Evil Dead was showcased and was instantly playable on Xbox and PC.
Spencer told IGN that it was the team’s idea and said  “Hey, it would just be fun. It would just be fun to be able to launch this during the Developer Direct and say, ‘Play it now.'” Hi-Fi Rush is also available on Xbox Game Pass for both PC and Consoles.
Xbox would also host another Showcase in Los Angeles, that could include an in-depth look at Starfield which wasn’t showcased in the Developer_Direct. The event will be held this Summer.
