Kevin Conroy: Voice of The Batman passes away at 66

The beloved voice actor dies of cancer

Kevin Conroy is best known for being the voice behind Batman in all animated series and Arkham games for three decades. He passed away on Thursday, 10th November 2022, after a short battle with cancer. His Batman career began in 1992’s with Batman: The Animated Series and later went on to voice the character in several computer games.

A legend, a role model, and nothing but perfection

Since he became the comic book hero, he has gone on to play the character on TV, in numerous movies and video games including Batman Beyond, Justice League series, Batman: The Killing Joke, and every Batman Arkham series video game. Kevin Conroy was the voice of Batman: The Animated Series and a whole lot of animated TV shows, movies, and computer games.

In total, he brought the character to life in almost 60 different productions, including 15 movies, 15 animated series spanning over 400 episodes, and more than 100 hours of television in addition to two dozen video games. He has been bestowed with 7 awards for his voice acting over the years, including Best Actor for his video game work in 2015.

The news of his unfortunate demise was first broken by Kevin’s Batman: The Animated Series co-star Diane Pershing, who voiced Poison Ivy, who wrote, “He will be sorely missed not just by the cast of the series but by his legion of fans all over the world.”

Also, Mark Hamill, who voiced the Joker opposite Kevin’s Batman in several projects said, “Kevin was perfection. He was one of my favorite people on the planet, and I loved him like a brother. He truly cared for the people around him— his decency shone through everything he did. Every time I saw him or spoke with him, my spirits were elevated.”

Conroy’s performance as Batman set a canon in the industry for others, especially for those who followed him, even in live-action films. He is credited with starting the use of two different voices for Bruce Wayne and Batman, making the latter’s voice heavier and raspier voice, as opposed to his, alter ego, Bruce Wayne. Kevin very recently wrote “Finding Batman”, which was presented as a part of the DC Pride 2022 earlier this year. He was open about his sexuality, making him the only openly gay actor to play Batman.

Kevin Conroy’s last appearances as Batman

Kevin’s last animated movie in which he played Batman was the 2019 Justice League, and the most recent video game he is credited with as Batman is Warner Bros.’ MultiVersus from earlier this year. His final Batman credit is the upcoming TV series Batman: Caped Crusader, which is currently being produced, according to IMDb, in which he was to play Thomas Wayne. The show might air in 2023.

His demise came as a devastating shock to all of us. He will forever be in our hearts and our one true nonpareil Batman.
